From 1993 to 1999, the Bertrand Maréchal Paris collections recast the archetypal model of haute couture – suits, dresses and evening wear – by linking it to urban wear: t-shirts, jeans and sweatshirts.
As soon as his earliest collections were shown, Bertrand Maréchal’s approach attracted the support of Vogue Paris editors Franceline Pratt, Marie-Amélie Sauvé and Martine de Menthon; but also Le Monde journalist Laurence Benaïm; Michel Cressol and Loïc Prigent from Libération;and Suzy Menkes of Herald Tribune.
The clothes were immediately photographed by Helmut Newton, Ines van Lamswerde & Vinoud Matadin, Jean-Baptiste Mondino and Ellen von Unwerth, and offered for sale by Maria Luisa in Paris, Harrods of London and Henri Bendel in New York,
